The Folly of Multiple Holdem Hands at a Time

The starting hand is the foundation of the winning poker block we want to build. Selecting what starting hand to play is essential. But other players often think that emphasis on starting hands means playing as many starting hands as possible.

The truth is, the lesser hands we play compared to the opponent, the better winning chances we have against the opponent. Say, other players waste time playing 40 percent of their hands, and we only spend 20 percent, that would increase our advantages in the overall play. That may mean more pots won with excellent kickers. Or, if we hit pairs, they will have better chances against overcards. Our straights will best low straights. And so on. Fewer poker hands to play means more time and effort spent on getting better positioned.

With few hands, we may end up playing too rigid or tight. The best defense against this is to post blinds to control AA hands from suddenly getting us off balanced. So how many hands should we consider at a time? This really depends on the particular poker situation developing in front of us. Each game is a new game in poker. No one game can be connected to another game so that we can link them and establish a trend. One way of knowing how many hands are needed is by gauging how tight or loose a poker game has been. Multiple hands are possible if we're in the late position and there are many calling the hand.

For instance, a pair of 5 is not that good when there's one caller (tight one), but with 6 players who have hobbled to the pot (this is a loose one), this could be interesting and profitable, too. The more players peeking into the flop the better are our likely odds of winning. So remember: loose games afford flexibility for us to play more hands. When in early position suited QJ is an average hand to play. But it's worth trying when the player before us struggles with the bet. We get better likely odds as far as our draws are concerned. And when two players have struggled into the pot our opponents would probably not dare raise us except with the best of hands.

Thus, playing multiple starting hands really depends on the present situation at hand. We must be able to gauge how rigid or casual the present overall game is, and then act accordingly.
