Developing Hold'em Hands Beyond the Flop

Good strategies with holdem hands should enable us to play smoothly to the pot, but wait till the flop comes down on us.

Generally, the thing to remember is to know the chances of developing and improving the hand with the pot size in mind, then we get the excellent timing. Take this scenario on different odds with regards to the flop and see the possibilities of still improving our hand by the time we get the next card.

When the starting hand is AK and the flop has Q62. We're likely to hit a high pair on the turn. Then there are two other players remaining in a $5/$10 limit poker. The flop falls. The first person makes a $5 bet, the other player folds, and we're next to decide. What we have at the flop are two overcards. What if there's good reason to believe the remaining player has QQ? Our chance is to hit A or K, to get a likely winning pair. If it's 7 to 1 odds against getting our card on the turn, is it safe to call the $5?

Estimate the pot capacity, let 2 to 3 bets more for a good profit if we hit right, and control the pot if it gets more than $35 by calling—its' 7 to 1 on $5, remember? Well, it's possible to call more to fatten up the pot with such hand, but what if the pot can't get that hefty? The thing then is to just call with enough in the pot, and fold when the pot can't get any bigger. Just be careful when players after us raise because that makes our call more costly but the pot barely lucrative—and that does not seem to be beneficial in any way for us.

The Q62 example we have above is not to be treated in detail but a mere illustration of what it would be like having two overcards at the flop. The important thing here is to remember to do our best to improve our hand on the next turn, or when the next card is had. Also, we should realize that our odds to improve Holden hands are different from our odds to win. It always depends on the poker situation before us. At times, the same cards that make our hand look better are the same ones that hasten our opponent's win.

There are always ways and chances on improving Holdem hands at post flop.
