Some Holdem Hands to Play in Late Position

Being in late position is the best Holdem positioning to many poker players. There are lots of advantages being in late position, but we have also to be cautious, nonetheless.

Playing more hands is okay when in late position. We can even play mediocre holdem hands like low-rank suited connectors, especially when many players have already bet in and no one has raised yet. The more players there are who have bet in, the better it is when we have suited connectors. The reason is, we want the pot big enough if we hit it big on the flop.

If we have a suited 5 and 6 and we're positioned on the button, it would be exciting to call the big blind in this situation. Especially when six players have issued the first calls. Let's say the flop shows something very unhelpful to us. Then, we simply fold. But we take the chance that the flop may show something good for us—like a flush draw or even a straight—plus, we make a right hit. That would mean a hefty pot for us after six players have called before our turn.

Now, let's say that almost all the players at the table have limped to the pot, and again, we're in late position on the button, but this time we have a pair of ace. It's a good hand to have, yet it's nothing much when we're considering a multi-way pot. Thus, in this case, our best option is to raise substantially. A big raise in this scenario increases our odds for taking the pot so much, even if 3 players are left in the game. Late position gives us the last move after all Holdem hands being played are revealed.

Another one among good Holdem hands to play in late position is a suited king and queen. This is good for the draw. Let's say that 5 people have already limped due to very weak hands. Once we challenge the big blind with doubling it is quite likely that players already in would put in lots into the pot by calling, bloating it in the process. All we need is a good draw to make it to a multi-way and hefty pot.

The best thing about the late position is this: hitting a straight or a flush would help us win, not just the huge pot, but also players already in who'd pay us off more.
